ABERDEEN

The economic hub of Grays Harbor is the cities of Aberdeen, Hoquiam, and Cosmopolis, and approximately half of the county’s population lives in the three contiguous cities. Many of the visitor opportunities available relate to the heritage of timber and the sea.

Boat building is a growing industry in Grays Harbor. You can trace its roots with a tour or cruise on Washington State’s official tall ship, the Lady Washington, a historic reproduction of the ship that Captain Robert Gray used to first explore the West Coast. View some of the majestic homes once owned by timber barons which are now available on walking tours.

Or for a stay, consider a historic bed and breakfast. Make sure you check out the unique art displayed downtown. Plus, museums, festivals, community events, performing arts, and a street market fill the calendar year-round. A variety of dining and overnight accommodations will make your stay in Aberdeen one you will remember.

HOQUIAM

Take in the history and nature so abundant in Hoquiam.

You won’t want to miss out on the 7th Street Theatre. This beautiful, historic, atmospheric theater seats more than 1,100 people for the enjoyment of amateur and professional concerts and plays. The theater is located in downtown Hoquiam, among cool shops and great restaurants. Constructed in 1897, the exquisite mansion boasted all the comfort amenities of East Coast mansions of the day. The privately-owned mansion is open for tours as well.

If nature is more to your liking, check out the Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge where hundreds of thousands of shorebirds stop over during their spring and fall migrations. The birds feed here on their way North to the Artic and their southern return. A new 1,800 foot boardwalk makes walking and viewing of birds and wildlife easy. Then stop at the Grays Harbor Farmers Market and Craft Fair: one of only two Washington State farmers markets open year-round. Discover local produce, delicious pastries, fresh seafood, chowder, fine arts, and quality crafted items.

COSMOPOLIS

Cosmopolis is the oldest city in Grays Harbor County and was incorporated in 1891. According to James Phillips, in his book “Washington State Place Names”, the city was named in 1853 and means “city of the world”.
Local people prefer, with noticeable affection, to use the city’s nickname, “Cosi” (pronounced cause-ee).

Cosmopolis has three larger parks: Lions Club boasts a community field and play equipment; Mill Creek Park boasts a juvenile fishing pond, trails, and tennis courts; Makarenko Memorial Park has two miles of trails in a natural setting, soccer fields, and a community garden.
